BLM spares 83,000 acres from oil and gas drilling in Wyoming
The Bureau of Land Management announced today its decision not to issue oil and gas leases on 83,587 acres of public land in Wyoming in response to formal protests by Biodiversity Conservation Alliance, Center for Native Ecosystems, and other conservation groups.
Vermillion Basin Protected from Future Oil and Gas Leasing
The Bureau of Land Management’s Little Snake Field Office announced today that it will be closing Vermillion Basin to future oil and gas leasing. The importance of leaving Vermillion Basin untouched has been recognized by local citizens, conservation groups, Colorado leaders, and now, with today’s decision by the BLM, by the administration as well.

From 7/10/09 Union of Concerned Scientists report: In May 2006, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) provided a misleading scientific analysis of the location of anticipated oil and gas drilling activities and misrepresented the threat of future oil shale development to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). The BLM’s analysis was successful at stopping the FWS from protecting a rare wildflower under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Colorado Wildflower Deserves Greater Habitat Protection, Feds Say
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today that an endangered Colorado wildflower, the clay-loving wild buckwheat, needs greater protection, especially on Bureau of Land Management land east of Delta and Montrose. However, the Fish and Wildlife Service declined to revise critical habitat for the clay-loving wild buckwheat, saying it was precluded by “other priorities.”
